ConAgra Foods, Omaha, Neb., says it is now using between 30 percent and 40 percent post-consumer recycled plastic in nearly all frozen meal trays for Healthy Choice, Banquet, Kid Cuisine and Marie Callender's products. ConAgra says it partnered withAssociated Packaging Technologieson a new "ultra clean" sterilization process that makes it safe for consumers to eat prepared food directly from the frozen meal tray. The new trays are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as direct food contact materials. ConAgra estimates the new tray conversion is equal to diverting approximately 8 million pounds of plastic from landfills and into the recycling stream each year.
