Meat & Poultry Briefs: Heritage Farms, Petit Jean in the news
Meat & Poultry Briefs: All-natural pork processor Heritage Acres Foods LLC, Jefferson City, Mo., agreed to lease a Pleasant Hope, Mo., hog processing plant that was shuttered in July by Tai Shin Foods USA. Heritage CEO Joe Maxwell told the Springfield (Mo.) Business Journal his company plans by January to resume processing at the 100,000-sq.-ft. site. Heritage Acres also will move its headquarters to Pleasant Hope and develop the operation as a Midwest distribution center for organic pork and beef. . . . Petit Jean Poultry Inc., Arkadelphia, Ark., plans to close its Danville, Ark., processing plant on Jan. 31, 2009, according to Associated Press reports. Officials said the shutdown will affect nearly 500 workers and is tied to the loss of a processing contract with Tyson Foods. Petit Jean cited the same problem when it closed a Buffalo, Mo., plant earlier this summer.
