Heinz trims frozen biz, workforce
News media today said H.J. Heinz Co. completed the sale of its Kabobs frozen hors d'oeuvres business, including a factory in Lake City, Ga. A Heinz spokeswoman said the business was purchased by the Hunt Group, a private investment group in Atlanta, according to a Heinz spokeswoman.
In a regulatory filing, Pittsburgh-based Heinz said the business had sales of about $17 million and was part of its U.S. Foodservice operation. As a result of the deal, Heinz will record a pre-tax loss of about $15 million.
In other news, the Associated Press reported that the Heinz Frozen Food plant in Pocatello, Idaho, laid off 65 workers.
Spokesperson Jessica Jackson confirmed the news and said the layoffs were necessary to make sure the number of employees were in line with the production needs at the Pocatello facility. The operation still employs more than 700 people.
