Alpine Fresh, Inc., a Doral, Fla.-based grower, packer and shipper of fresh fruits and vegetables, revealed its efforts toward sustainability.
Over the past two years, Alpine Fresh has implemented a high-frequency intermittent drip (HFDI) irrigation system. This technology combines an automatic fertigation system with a high-pressure drip irrigation methodology that doses/drips in short shifts. This specialized irrigation technology allows the farms to use 30% less water than is generally used for farming asparagus.
“Our retail partners are very supportive and appreciate our efforts toward sustainability,” says Walter Yager, chief executive officer. “Right now, these efforts are being applied to about 400 acres, and we expect to double that over the next three years.”
