Braskem USA, Philadelphia, Pa., partnered with Clemson University, Clemson, S.C., and Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul Federal University (UFRGS), to develop new technology that allows packaging to change color when the product is unfit for consumption.
This intelligent packaging uses specific indicators to demonstrate the state of conservation of its contents.
For example, in research conducted with poultry, meat and fish, the pH alterations determined a packaging color change. Chemical substances reacted to specific indicators of product damage, and thus were added to the thermoplastic resin used in the packaging. When product integrity suffers any type of alteration, the packaging changes color to alert the consumer.
