A M King, Charlotte, N.C., is expanding ALDI’s 500,000-square-foot food distribution facility in South Windsor, Conn., nine years after it first designed and built it, making way for additional cold storage space and an opportunity for the Batavia, Ill.-based grocer to stretch its product line and boost growth in the Northeast region. The project is anticipated to be completed by September 2018.
The expansion is multi-phased and will break down as follows:
- Perishable expansion – 70,000 square feet
- Interior renovations to office and employee welfare areas, which includes creating more private office space and expanding the large conference room
- Infrastructure upgrades for a future dry warehouse expansion—100,000 square feet
“We are cutting in new dock positions at locations planned for the future,” says Carl Morse, A M King’s senior project manager. “We are also adding a new interior mezzanine to create additional square footage to meet the owner’s needs.”
In addition, A M King will coordinate truck apron expansion for trailer parking, install a Quell fire suppression system for the new perishable space and expand the warehouse employee break room and locker room areas.
Sustainability initiatives include variable frequency drives on equipment, a white PVC roof, photovoltaic solar expansion and a LED retrofit.
