More than two dozen public health, nonprofit trade groups and governmental organizations are calling on the Biden administration and Congress to make changes in support of food safety.
Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) entered the lexicon of foodborne pathogens in the mid-1980s. Initially associated primarily with meat contamination, STEC-contaminated produce products broke onto the food safety scene in 1996 when consumers became sick from drinking unpasteurized Odwalla-brand apple juice.
Almost every refrigerated or frozen food product must be stored, transported, and sold with suitable packaging. For manufacturers and retailers, that packaging must enable damage-free transport, ensure stability, be easy to stack, and be lightweight to keep transportation costs low.
With the final FSMA IA rule in effect for small businesses since July and large businesses a year before that, coupled with changes to the food supply chain in response to the pandemic, risk assessment and mitigation should be a priority now more than ever. For the refrigeration and frozen food industry specifically, changes have also evolved with the implementation of the Sanitary Transportation rule.

While the origin of a cluster of coronavirus infections in Beijing, China, is unknown, some officials are suggesting the virus was present on chopping boards used to cut imported salmon. The speculation is also drawing a misleading conclusion that frozen foods can contribute to the spread of coronavirus.
