After several years of decline, the frozen foods industry is experiencing an uptick in sales, ringing up nearly $57 billion annually, according to “The Power of Frozen 2019,” a study released by The American Frozen Food Institute (AFFI), Arlington, Va., and Food Marketing Institute (FMI), Arlington, Va.
The core frozen food shoppers stated they value taste, quality, variety and consistency, and are willing to be more adventurous with their palate and try new cuisines.
The frozen entrées category still reigns supreme at $9.2 billion annually, followed by frozen soups/sides, frozen appetizers/snack rolls and frozen breakfast items.
But, for companies like Nestlé, Unilever, General Mills and Tyson Foods, just to name a few, business is not just about producing frozen foods. Today, it’s also about sustainable food initiatives, waste reduction programs, improved environmental practices, workplace safety, transparency and reusable packaging.
Buzzwords like blockchain, Internet of Things, cloud-based, automation and artificial intelligence provide opportunities for today’s frozen foods processors to move product from Point A to Point B in a safer, more efficient way.
Meanwhile, mergers and acquisitions continue to re-shape the frozen foods market. For instance, Tyson Foods sold its Sara Lee Frozen Bakery and Van’s businesses to private equity firm Kohlberg & Co., then later purchased Keystone Foods. Conagra acquired Pinnacle Foods. Oregon Potato Co. scooped up (and eventually dissolved) Inventure Foods. And, so many more.
However, through all of the changes and transformations, one thing remains a constant—the frozen foods industry is back, and better than ever.
