Gotham Greens Holdings, LLC, Brooklyn, N.Y., announced plans to open a state-of-the-art greenhouse in the Denver, Colo., area in early 2020. The facility will operate year-round to supply fresh produce to retailers, restaurants and foodservice customers in the Denver market and greater Mountain West region.
The 30,000-square-foot greenhouse will sit adjacent to Stanley Marketplace, a food hall and urban market in Aurora, Colo. The greenhouse is located on an abandoned runway at the former Denver Stapleton Airport site that had been sitting vacant for decades.
Once open, the greenhouse will also serve as a resource to educate local residents and visitors on the benefits of sustainable, indoor farming by hosting free guided tours, as well as field trips for schools, universities and other local community organizations and businesses.
Gotham Greens’ produce is grown using hydroponic systems in 100% renewable electricity-powered greenhouses that are able to grow 35 times more lettuce per acre than conventional farming while using 95% less water and 97% less land.
