Sara Lee to buy sausage biz; exit dough?
In conjunction with a third-quarter earnings release, Sara Lee Corp., Downers Grove, Ill., said it agreed to buy premium processor Aidells Sausage Company Inc., San Leandro, Calif., for $87 million.
"We are focused on preparing both the [future] Coffee company and the Meat company for strong and vibrant futures," said Executive Chairman Jan Bennink. "Looking ahead, in North America, we are pleased to announce that we signed an agreement to acquire Aidells Sausage Company. Aidells premium, high potential products will enhance our North American meat portfolio. Also within North America, we will be evaluating our strategic options regarding the North American refrigerated dough business."
