A new look for a kitchen classic from the refrigerated section: SÜDPACK is launching two innovative packaging concepts for minced meat that do without bottom trays. What is more, the two concepts are mono-material packaging solutions based on polypropylene (PP). They stand out for their excellent recyclability and significantly lower material consumption compared to standard packaging, which makes these solutions especially resource-saving, while also scoring in terms of sustainability at the point of sale.
New look for a sustainable impression
The Flow Pack PurePP film is an innovative and unconventional packaging solution for "minced" products, which captures consumers’ attention at first glance. It achieves material savings of up to 60 percent compared to tray packaging. For example, a PurePP flow-wrapped pack for one kilogram of minced meat weighs as little as 9.5 gram. It is also an attractive solution for manufacturers in other respects: Flow Pack PurePP can be processed quickly and efficiently on all common flow wrapping machines, even at high speeds, thanks to its good sealing properties.
But SÜDPACK also offers a packaging solution for minced meat in thermoformed packs, consisting of the Multifol PurePP soft film as the bottom film and a peelable PP-based upper film. This also contributes significantly to the reduction of packaging material volume: the solution uses 55 percent of the material used to make tray packaging. The weight of a pack for one kilogram of minced meat is as little as 10.7 gram. Manufacturers can process this solution on all existing thermoforming packaging machines as it has outstanding thermoforming and sealing properties. Depending on production requirements, the concept supports modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and vacuum packaging.
Perfect product protection and scope for design
Thanks to their high barrier properties, the two film concepts offer the same high level of product protection as standard tray packaging. With both concepts, the typical shape and consistency of minced meat is preserved and presented in an appetizing manner. The integrated antifog effect prevents the pack from steaming up and gives consumers a clear view of the product. In terms of design, both solutions offer maximum scope for creativity – they can be printed using flexographic or gravure printing.
The Pure-Line
With its innovative Pure-Line, SÜDPACK recently launched its own range of composite films, which stands out for its good recyclability. „Pure“ stands for composite films that are predominantly made of material from the same polymeric family whilst offering the same protective and convenient properties as composite materials made of different polymers. The new PurePP products are made using polypropylene; the material’s recyclability has been confirmed by leading institutes. The renowned Institute cyclos-HTP has certified a recyclability of 95 percent for the resealable Multipeel PurePP film. "The Pure-Line products are the result of intensive research and development. They demonstrate our continuous efforts to improve and rethink existing packaging concepts", Carolin Grimbacher, managing partner of the SÜDPACK Group, explains.
This also applies to the two new film solutions for minced meat – one of the most important and, concurrently, most sensitive refrigerated products. The Ochsenhausen-based packaging experts took the well-known innovation mantra "think outside the box" literally and developed two concepts that go without a PP tray entirely: "This also means our customers can dispense with the most material- and resource-intensive part of standard packaging to date," Grimbacher explains. "In addition, we count upon the high quality and recyclability of our Pure-Line composite films. In combination, this makes the new packaging concepts particularly innovative and sustainable.“ The two packaging concepts seamlessly fit into SÜDPACK's roadmap for sustainable film packaging.
