Schwan selling European pizza biz
Dr. Oetker UK Ltd., Leeds, United Kingdom, said it agreed to purchase a pizza production plant in Leyland, England and the Chicago Town frozen food brand from The Schwan Food Company, Marshall, Minn. Terms also provide for Dr. Oetker to market and distribute the Freschetta and Tony's brands in Europe. Dr. Oetker processes frozen pizza and pizza snacks, yogurt, chilled desserts and home baking products.
In a separate deal, Schwan agreed to sell its frozen pizza plant in Osterweddingen, Germany, to Freiberger Group, Berlin. In turn, Freiberger will produce frozen branded pizza products for Dr. Oetker from the Osterweddingen plant.
According to the Associated Press, Schwan officials plan to reinvest sale proceeds into North American operations. Schwan reportedly is keeping a production facility in northern France.
