Dips and spreads are said to be one of the fastest-growing segments in the refrigerated foods industry, thanks to organic offerings, bold flavors and intricate packaging options. Here’s a breakdown of trends impacting the retail dips and spreads category.
Organic offerings. La Terra Fina, Union City, Calif., added a new line of organic Ranch dips and hummus. Made with Greek yogurt, the organic Ranch dips come in Classic Ranch, Cracked Black Pepper Ranch and Chipotle Ranch varieties, while the organic hummus line is comprised of Classic, Roasted Red Pepper and Roasted Garlic kinds. Both dips and hummus come in packaging made from 35% recycled PET materials.
Cedar’s Mediterranean Foods, Ward Hill, Mass., launched a line of new and improved organic hommus. This line of USDA-certified organic, non-GMO project verified and gluten-free-certified refrigerated dips come in Original, Roasted Red Pepper and Garlic Lovers.
Greek yogurt dips. Cedar’s Mediterranean Foods, Inc., Ward Hill, Mass., launched a new line of all-natural Greek Yogurt Dips. Dubbed as a healthier substitute to mayonnaise, salad dressing and conventional dip products, these Greek Yogurt Dips are made with all-natural Greek yogurt and come in Ultimate Spinach Dip with 3 Cheeses, Jalapeño Artichoke Cheese and Buffalo Bleu Cheese.
Litehouse Foods, Sandpoint, Idaho, announced three extensions to its OPA by Litehouse line of Greek yogurt salad dressings. Kalamata Feta, Roasted Pepper and Jalapeño Ranch pull from global flavor inspirations to add interesting and palate-pleasing flavors to a line of traditional favorites. This product received first place in this year’s Reader's Choice Best New Retail Products contest.
Protein-packed pairings. Pure Mediterranean Foods, Elk Grove Village, Ill., introduced Hummus Plus Chicken, a protein-packed product that pairs hummus with seasoned chicken. Hummus Plus comes in 8-ounce, on-the-go packs available in Traditional Hummus+ Oven-Roasted Chicken Breast, Garlic Hummus+ Garlic Herb Chicken Breast, Roasted Red Pepper Hummus+ BBQ Seasoned Chicken Breast, Sun-Dried Tomato Hummus+ Oven Roasted Chicken Breast and Garlic Hummus+ Chipotle Chicken Breast.
Some like it hot. Fresherized Foods, the Fort Worth, Texas-based maker of the Wholly Guacamole brand, introduced new guacamole dips, available in Hatch Chile (blends cilantro, garlic and Hass Avocados), Three Chile (features fresh pablano peppers and roasted hatch and jalapeno peppers, mixed with ripe Hass Avocados, creamy tomatillo and a few other spices) and Spicy Homestyle (features chunky tomatoes, onions, cilantro and jalapeño peppers).
Tribe Mediterranean Foods, Inc., Taunton, Mass., lifted the lid on its limited-batch Fiery Sriracha variety, an explosive blend of the brand’s smooth hummus and chili pepper-based sriracha sauce topped with red pepper flakes.
Vegetable based. Tribe also launched a Farmer’s Market line, a colorful collection of hummus flavors inspired by fresh tastes and vibrant colors of the farmer’s market. The line includes Harvest Carrot & Ginger, Cucumber Tzatziki and Vine Ripened Tomato & Basil varieties.
Eat Well Embrace Life, Alpharetta, Ga., debuted new vegetable hummus combinations, available in Zesty Sriracha Carrot with a sunflower seed and apricot topping and Beet hummus with a pickled beet topping.
Snack packs. Wild Garden, Cicero, Ill., introduced “Snack Pack To Go!” a selection of gluten-free CrunchMaster multi-seed crackers, The Daily Crave veggie chips and Wild Garden quinoa chips paired with Traditional and Roasted Garlic-flavored hummus dips.
Furthermore, Tribe launched a new, single-serve To Go hummus and artisan pita chip pack. Available in Classic and Sweet Roasted Red Pepper varieties, the easy-to-handle design features a simple pop top and see-through window that allows a clear view of the hummus. On the inside, hummus lovers will find a uniquely designed bag of pita chips, a “shovel” (a hearty scoop). These snack packs come in Original and Sweet Roasted Red Pepper.
Spreads. Unilever USA, Englewood Cliffs, N.J., transformed its buttery spreads portfolio, beginning with I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! (ICBINB) in Original, Light and Olive Oil. The new spreads provide a source of good fats similar to those found in avocados, walnuts and almonds. Furthermore, its redesigned packaging consists of a new, rectangular shape that is more space-efficient in the refrigerator, dishwasher safe (top rack only), re-usable and recyclable.
